Warm, welcoming, and well runned classrooms begin with the physical classroom layout or the environmental plan. The arrangement of desks, working space, centers, the attractiveness and appeal of bulletin boards, and the storage of materials and supplies plays a huge role on a students education. I believe that the physical layout of a classroom should reflect a teachers learning style. A classroom that is comfortable, friendly and colorful creates a very positive learning and social environment for students. The most important thing about a classroom is that it functions effectively.
In many classrooms, the largest amount of space is devoted to the arrangement of individual student desks. In the classroom I designed I placed four desks in a sqare shape to make tables. The reason I did this is because I strongly believe and encourage students to talk to one another and work together. This helps their social skills as well as their communication skills. I also think it is important for students to work together and learn from one another. I also believe this promotes group work. I plan to frequently change seats so students make friends and learn to work with others. While I was arranging my classroom I thought about how important it was for me to be able to see each and every student from all around the room. I placed my desk in the front of the room facing all of the students. Next to my desk I placed a bulliten board, chalk board, and white board. This was a convient location because it is right near my desk and will be where I would be teaching lessons. I also thought that having a bulliten board in the front of the room was helpful for both the students and I because I can hang up student work or important information that students can refer to.
Easily accessible materials and supplies can eliminate delays, traffic jams, disruptions, and confusion as students prepare for or complete different activities. Providing students with access to materials and supplies they may need promotes independence. The reason for this is because the students become familiar with where things are and what is around them so they can begin to do things on their own.
In my classroom I placed a computer center against the back wall. I think computer time gives students the chance to either play interactive learning games, watch educational videos, or explore topics of interest. Students love using computers and technology so I thought this was important to have in my classroom. I placed a carpet and cozy corner in one of the corners of my room. I placed a book shelf near this area for students to also use as a library center. I thought that this would be a good idea because sometimes when students relax they enjoy looking at a book quietly. I placed blocks, dramatic play, and gross motor games all along the same wall spread out. I placed all of these areas near eachother because they are centers that students can play and use in groups. I think all of these areas are places where students can talk, play together, and socialize in a friendly environment. I also placed these near eachother because they will not all be used at the same time. I placed all of my subject learning centers such as math, writing, language, and science in the back left corner. I placed them all near eachother because students will be working on one subject at a time and there will be several tables for the students to sit at. If there is a time where students can choose a center they can also use these centers for free choice for writing or learning about a specific subject area. Lastly, I placed a rug by my desk where students can bring manipulatives or floor games to use. I placed this away from the other rugs and games so that students will have space and be spread out .
As a current and future educator I have realized how important it is to be flexible because there are many times that I will have to change my room around based on the students in my class. I think that evaluating and making changes is extremely important during the school year. I also think that just making changes and modifications is important so students learn to be flexible and to try new things.
