"What is fair isn’t always equal”. I am a strong believer that each child is a unique individual who needs a strong, warm, caring, and nurturing environment where they have the opportunity to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator I want to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, educational, supports risk-taking, and welcomes all cultures and ideas. I want all students to feel comfortable and to assure that the voice of each student is heard. I want students to feel free to express themselves and learn to respect their teachers, peers, and lessons they are exposed to. I believe that as an educator I should act as a guide, respect all people and things, allow students to work collaboratively, make time for play, and allow students to learn using a hands on based approach. I truly believe that it is crucial for students to take perspectives on others and learn from their perspectives. I believe that each child is special, and can contribute something remarkable to our world.
I am convinced that it is the teachers role to guide students with their learning by providing them with access to information rather than being the primary source of information. I think it is extremely beneficial for students to search for knowledge, research, and find answers to questions. I believe that giving students the opportunity to discover allows them to construct knowledge and practice real life skills. Giving students the chance to learn through hands on activities helps them construct their own knowledge and discover individually. By experimenting students learn about themselves students become aware of what they enjoy doing and what they don’t enjoy doing. This allows them to become who they really are. Providing the students with time to work collaboratively with others can foster intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth. I believe that working in partners or groups develops skills that students need in the real world. As an educator, I want to encourage children to work together, learn from others, and help people around them.
I support a strong connection between home and school. I think that connecting home and school positively affects a student’s childhood learning experience. This allows students to feel comfortable in both settings while being able to extend and continue learning outside of school. I believe that studying things that are meaningful and relevant to one’s life and interests allows them to be engaged in their own learning and self-discovery. Developing a curriculum around the student’s interests fosters engagement, motivation, and stimulates the passion to learn and succeed. I think that inviting students to speak about the lessons, topics, and units of study is really beneficial for students because they are able to generate ideas and learn from one another.
To me, play is the most important part of a students life. “Play is often talked about as if it was a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” I believe that a playful environment with centers, hands on activities, and tools to discover is influential for students because they are able to explore, discover and socialize. Using a variety of tools and materials can give the students the chance to explore their abilities while getting participating in a learning and meaningful experience.
Teaching is a lifelong learning process. For myself, teaching provides students with an opportunity to continue to learn and grow. As an educator, one hope I have is to share my passion for teaching and compassion for students. As always, I plan to make sure that each student receives the best education they can. I will assist children in discovering who they are, so they can express their own opinions and nurture their own ideas. Throughout my years as a student and teacher, I have learned to accept and open my mind and heart to the differences, people, diversity, and joy in the world and will always strive to instill that in my teaching. As I continue to teach, I will remember, “what is fair isn’t always equal”.
